Building New Beginnings

"Our Building New Beginnings capital campaign was the largest capital effort for Florence Crittenton in over 100 years," said Carrie Walker-Ostroski, Director of Development for Florence Crittenton. Walker-Ostroski remarks that no one was around who remembered how to raise the sums of money that would be needed. Yet, the board of directors could no longer tolerate inadequate facilities for the number of girls needing the counseling, residential support and education offered by the agency.

The staff at Florence Crittenton got ready. Built a strong board. Cultivated potential donors. Gave a tour to anyone that would listen. Improved the annual giving program. Developed schematic drawings and cost estimates. Finally, they charged Young & Company with the task of managing the $7 million capital development campaign.

"Alan Young and Young & Company took Florence Crittenton to a new level and reintroduced us, and the importance of our services to over a thousand girls, boys and their families each year, to the community. Our services were so highly confidential that many in the community thought we were still a home for unwed mothers."

Jon Campbell, head of Wells Fargo Bank, was the campaign's chairman, and Vice President and Mrs. Dan Quayle were the honorary chairs. Right on schedule, the campaign hit its mark, thanks to hundreds of generous donors, including three who gave more than $1 million each.

"With Alan's expertise, professionalism and credibility our current mission and services were shared with people who truly care about Arizona's children and new doors to resources and funding were opened. Our capital campaign, raising over $7 million, would not have been such a great success without Young & Company."

The campaign allowed Florence Crittenton to double the number of girls in the residential program and triple the number of students in its school. More importantly, the campaign demonstrated Arizona's loving concern for teens who desperately need the attention only Florence Crittenton can provide.
